The Return of “TUROK: DINOSAUR HUNTER” (Review of Issue #1)

Turok01-Cov-SearsFor those of us who remember the old Gold Key heroes, this is a most welcome sight…the beginning of Dynamite’s take on these iconic characters.  One of our favorite writers, Greg Pak has been tapped to bring Turok back to the shelves of your LCS, with exceptional artwork from Mirko Colak.  And, how does it fare?

LIGHTS SPOILERS ONLY

In this new take, Turok is a young Native American who has been shunned by his tribe, called by some a “witch boy”.  But, he has made a life for himself on his own…or as he says, “Alone is better”.  There are certainly dinosaurs to be found here…but they may not be the biggest danger as we find out the time…and place of this story.

Pak takes the classic character and creates his own spin, with an exceptional story to start this new series.  The artwork is lush in its depection of this early time, effectively setting the stage for this tale – with pencils/inks by Mirko Colak and colors from Lauren Affe.  There have been several takes on this character over the years, long before Acclaim (or video games) existed, and even before his first Gold Key appearance in 1956.  This is a great story in its own right, and I’m looking forward to more from this excellent creative team.
