Welcome once again to THE 10 SPOT – our roundup of the very best books from indie publishers each week. This week brings us VAMPIRELLA #1 and DEJAH THORIS #2 from Dynamite, and ACTION LAB: DOG OF WONDER #1 from Action Lab (the logo comes to life!). Let’s get started with…
VAMPIRELLA #1 (Dynamite) – Kate Leth (ADVENTURE TIME, BRAVEST WARRIORS and more) has a stellar debut as the new series writer for Vampirella, bringing our favorite vampire into the age of social media. The new look for Vampi makes sense in the plot, taking her into L.A. and all the paparazzi that comes with being in the entertainment capital of the world. It’s a great start, with beautiful artwork by Eman Casallos and colors by Valentina Pinto. 10/10
DEJAH THORIS #2 (Dynamite) – Frank Barbiere continues his excellent first arc for the now-former princess, taking her into the gritty world outside her old home. This arc does a gets to the core of the character, making Dejah even more heroic than before (if that is even possible). The artwork is spot-on, by Francesco Manna with colors by Morgan Hickman. 10/10
ACTION LAB: DOG OF WONDER #1 (Action Lab) – Fans of this publisher have long admired that dog with the jet pack in the logo…turns out, that jet back does a LOT more than help this dog fly! Think Lassie meets Inspector Gadget, with a nobility all its own. This Action Lab saves abused, forgotten and neglected pooches…finding families that will truly care for them. This is an absolutely adorable story! Good Dog, Action Lab! Written by Scott Fogg (PHILEAS REID KNOWS WE ARE NOT ALONE) and Vito Delsante (STRAY) and illustrated by Rosy Higgins and Ted Brandt (PRINCELESS: RAVEN: THE PIRATE PRINCESS), this is a terrifically talented team – and they have crafted an amazing start to the series! Btw – DC isn’t the ONLY place you can find a Neal Adams variant cover this month…check the variants out for this book! 10/10
That’s it for this week’s 10 SPOT – but we aren’t done yet with our round-up of great indie books! Be sure to look for PRESSED TO THE 9’s and THE GREAT 8’s for more reviews of amazing indie comics!
