Our Rating

Welcome to another installment of The 10 Spot – a quick round-up of the very best books from indie publishers this week. Kicking off this week’s 10 Spot is…

CONAN RED SONJA #1 (Dark Horse) – This series combines iconic characters with an A-List creative team, and what else do you need to know? Okay, Conan…Red Sonja…Jim Zub…Gail Simone…Dan Panosian…Dave Stewart…and a book that more than lives up to the hype. We see a younger Conan and Sonja in their first meeting, handled in a way that allows both to shine without seeming contrived. It is everything you could hope for from this title…and more. 10/10

TEN GRAND #12 (Image/Joe’s Comics) – J. Michael Straczynski brings this arc to a close with an ending that is as close to cinematic as a comic can get…and it is absolutely heartbreaking.  This is one of my favorite series, and if you aren’t reading it right now, why aren’t you? I loved the juxtaposition of the art styles that separated the “real world” from the “spirit world” (thanks to C.P. Smith and Matthew Dow Smith).  I can’t imagine a more impressive ending to a story arc, and I cannot wait to see what comes next. 10/10

FRAGGLE ROCK: JOURNEY TO THE EVERSPRING  #4 (Archaia) – Okay, I’m a long-time fan of anything Henson-related, but then again aren’t you? Kate Leth has channeled the best of Jim Henson in this tale, and the ending is spot-on. Somewhere, Jim Henson is smiling right now. Jake Myler’s illustrations are perfect here, and the whole story just leaves a warm feeling in your heart – at least it did for me. 10/10

VAMPIRELLA #100 (Dynamite) – An issue befitting this iconic character, as a host of creators pull together for an anthology issue that is a true must-read book. The list of writers includes Nancy A. Collins, Eric Trautmann, Brandon Jerwa, Mark Rahner, and Tim Seeley, with an array of artists just as impressive. This book is a LOT of fun – don’t miss it!  10/10

That’s it for our 10 Spot this week – but we still have more great indie comics in our “Pressed to the Nines” feature and our “Great Eights”. And, keep checking in throughout the week with TMStash for all your news, reviews and commentary!
