Welcome to another installment of The 10 Spot – a quick round-up of the very best books from indie publishers this week. Kicking off this week’s 10 Spot is…
THE DEATH-DEFYING DR MIRAGE #1 (Valiant) – The debut of this 5-issue series is right on the money with a mixture of drama, action and paranormal strangeness. Dr Shan Fong-Mirage can speak to the dead…almost all the dead…but why can she not communicate with her own deceased husband? And, what danger is she facing in the latest job she has taken on? Dr Mirage has plenty of tricks up her sleeve, and she may need all of them simply to survive! There is a “plus” edition with an extra story – if you are so inclined as to be willing to part with just a little more cash, this edition is well worth it. Jen Van Meter has given us an excellent script, with amazing artwork by Roberto de la Torre (pencils/inks) and David Baron (colors). Another VALIANT FIRST that rates a 10/10
TUROK: DINOSAUR HUNTER #7 (Dynamite) – Turok’s talents with great monsters has gathered quite a bit of attention, and he is forced into service to train even more “monsters” for the defense of a city! Turok is trapped between two sides, and both sides want him dead! Turok’s story continues to impress – thanks to writer Greg Pak and artist Takeshi Miyazawa. This volume of TUROK is must-read material, easily a 10/10
SIDEKICK #8 (Image/Joe’s Comics) – By now we all know that the Red Cowl didn’t really die…but how did he pull it off? And, why did he leave Flyboy in the lurch? The answers are here…but the former Flyboy (now Sidekick) is waaay past worrying about the whys. Sidekick and Julia Moonglow are on the path to a whole new life, and getting back at the Red Cowl is only part of the plan! J. Michael Straczynski has put together a riveting deconstruction of the whole concept of sidekicks, as Barry Chase’s fall from grace reaches new depths. Tom Mandrake’s art (with colors by HiFi) continues to be just as fantastic as the script. This is a series well worth adding to any buy pile. 10/10
That’s it for our 10 Spot this week – but we still have more great indie comics in our “Pressed to the Nines” feature and our “Great Eights”. And, keep checking in throughout the week with TMStash for all your news, reviews and commentary!
