Our Rating

The indie scene has some truly amazing titles, and even more must-read books that we could get to in our “10 Spot” feature. THAT’s why we have PRESSED TO THE NINES, books that rated a 9/10 on our review scale that are at your local comic shops NOW! Let’s get started with…

VAMPIRELLA #4 (Dynamite) – This iconic character is in excellent hands with Nancy A. Collins.  Vampirella continues her quest to rid herself of the curse placed on her by Ethan Shroud, and it takes her to the Greek isles…and an ancient and powerful foe! Collins is an amazing writer, and her story is accessible for fans both old and new.  The artwork is amazing, from Patrick Berkenkotter (pencils), Dennis Crisostomo (inks) and Jorge Sutil (colors).  This is a Vampirella for the ages – and well worth a 9/10

EX-CON #1 (Dynamite) – Cody Pomeray (or at least, that’s the name he’s using these days) has a special ability to see people in colored lights…lights that tell him everything he needs to know about almost everyone he meets.  He’s used that to his full advantage…right up to the day he was tossed into prison! Now that he’s out, he owes a HUGE favor…and the man to whom he owes that favor is collecting right away! Duane Swierczynski scripts this fantastic tale, illustrated exceptionally well by Keith Burns (with colors by Aikau Oliva).  We’ll all be watching for the lights…and for more EX-CON! 9/10

TWILIGHT ZONE #8 (Dynamite) – Diana Westby has been experiencing visions, premonitions of a terrible catastrophe that only she can prevent…or can she? This story resolves in a way that can be found only in the Twilight Zone – J. Michael Straczynski channels Rod Serling perfectly here, with excellent artwork by Guiu Vilanova (colors by Vinicius Andrade).  This series captures the feel of the original series so well that I keep expecting Serling himself to step in at the last minute to wrap up the tale.  Easily a 9/10

NAILBITER #5 (Image) – This story just gets more twisted by the page – and that’s a very good thing.  Buckaroo, Oregon seems to keep producing serial killers, and part of that secret may be in the strange mind of the Nailbiter…but what happens to the investigation (and the investigators) this time around? One of them has a terrible secret that is revealed this issue, and our favorite (?) serial killer has an extra surprise up his sleeve as well! Joshua Williamson has a real talent for making this story exceptionally creepy without going over the edge, and the art by Mike Henderson (with colors by Adam Guzowski) is the perfect compliment for this wonderful script.  9/10

That’s it for “Pressed to the Nines” for this week – but we still have the “Great Eights” to go! And, keep checking back with TMStash throughout the week for all your news, reviews and commentary!
