PRESSED TO THE 9’s: NEGATIVE SPACE, CHEW, PUPPET MASTER, JUPITER’S CIRCLE, VICTORIE CITY

Our Rating

Welcome back to PRESSED TO THE 9’s, our look at some of the best indie comics available at your comic shop NOW! This week in our 9/10 rated lineup you’ll find NEGATIVE SPACE #3 from Dark Horse, PUPPET MASTER #11 from Action Lab’s Danger Zone, CHEW #54 and JUPITER’S CIRCLE #3 from Image, and VICTORIE CITY #1 from IDW. Let’s get started with…

NEGATIVE SPACE #3 (Dark Horse) – Ryan K Lindsay has some of the most terrifically strange titles I’ve ever read, books that present truly original (if slightly warped) premises, like HEADSPACE (a story mostly inside the mind of a serial killer) and DEER EDITOR (and yes, an actual Deer is an actual newspaper editor, it’s awesome). In NEGATIVE SPACE, we’re dealing with beings who suck up our emotions, and the one (former?) loser who holds the key to stopping them. NEGATIVE SPACE is beautifully strange and wonderful, with excellent artwork by Owen Gieni.  9/10

CHEW #54 (Image) – This fantastic series is winding toward its eventual advertised conclusion in issue #60, but this issue proves CHEW is not losing any steam. In fact, John Layman and Rob Guillory (with color assist by Taylor Wells) are raising the tension with a warning that begins the issue…and a VERY tragic act that ends it! In between are some of the more fantastic actions and hilarious Easter Eggs you’ll find in comics. You may have a tough time jumping in at this point if you haven’t been reading CHEW, but don’t worry…just have your wallet open because you will immediately want to grab back issues once you check out CHEW. 9/10

PUPPET MASTER #11 (Action Lab/Danger Zone) – Another fantastic arc comes to a close as we end “Boy of Wood”. We know who the big bad of the arc is…but there are a LOT of twists that must play out before we get to the end. Shawn Gabborin’s script keeps the spirit of the amazing cult classic movie series intact. Antonio Ontiveros’ artwork (with colors by Daniel Morales Olvera) give us spot-on imagery that makes the experience as close as possible to living out the movies themselves. This is a great read – PUPPET MASTER is one of the best horror books going today! 9/10

JUPITER’S CIRCLE #3 (Image) – Mark Millar’s story veers slightly from the relationship-heavy scripts of earlier issues and into hero/villain territory with a terrific Silver Age-y twist. Still, there is plenty of the excellent characterization you’ve come to expect from a Millar book. The artwork in this issue is a true team effort that keeps the high quality we’ve come to expect for this series – Chris Sprouse, Karl Story, Walden Wong, Ive Svorcina, and Peter Doherty. It is always a treat when we get each new issue of JUPITER’S CIRCLE. 9/10

VICTORIE CITY #1 (IDW)Our Nick Doran (@Danger_Doran on Twitter) has a full-length review that describes this book far better than I can in this space…check out his review, and be sure to check out this excellent new series! 9/10

That’s it for our Pressed to the 9’s list for this week…don’t miss out on our 10 SPOT and GREAT 8’s lists to see more of the very best in indie comics!
