Our Rating

The indie scene has some truly amazing titles, and even more must-read books that we could get to in our “10 Spot” feature. THAT’s why we have PRESSED TO THE NINES, books that rated a 9/10 on our review scale that are at your local comic shops NOW! Let’s get started with…

DOCTOR SPEKTOR: MASTER OF THE OCCULT #3 (Dynamite) – Reality has been shredded here as we find Abby in one version of reality and Spektor in yet another…and how do we  find Magnus, Turok and the new Solar here? Writer Mark Waid has taken this previously lesser-known gem of the Gold Key Universe and brought it to life in grand fashion.  This is a very strange and wonderful tale, illustrated exceptionally well by Neil Edwards and Roberto Castro (with colors by Luigi Anderson and Mauricio Wallace).  9/10

SKYWARD #9 (Action Lab) – The finale to the “Battle of Three Rivers” is here…and there are even more big reveals yet to be found!  Writer/Artist Jeremy  Dale has built an amazing world in this series, with a host of characters you will absolutely love.  I never thought of rabbits…er, Rabites as being so tough, and they will need to be if they are to assist our heroes in keeping Herod from taking over!  I’ve enjoyed every panel of every page in this series so far…don’t miss this one!  9/10

BRAIN BOY: THE MEN FROM G.E.S.T.A.L.T. #4 (Dark Horse) – This mini-series comes to a mind-shattering conclusion with a cliffhanger that is guaranteed to have you screaming WHY ARE YOU ENDING THIS NOW! Of course, this isn’t the end for Brain Boy, as there is a lead-in to Project Black Sky…but this is an excellent conclusion to a great story arc as we find out what was behind the attack on the White House and from whom Georgina has been protecting Matt Price all this time! Fred Van Lente has an excellent script, working with one of my favorite artists, Freddie Williams II (with colors by Jeremy Colwell).  9/10

ARMOR HUNTERS: HARBINGER #2 (Valiant) – There is something growing at the center of the blast site in Mexico City, and Faith, Torque and Generation Zero are all there to check it out! Can they all get along?  What do you think? And, what they find when they investigate this phenomenon is something far bigger and more dangerous than anyone had feared! Joshua Dysart continues with stellar scripts, complimented by the art of Robert Gill and the colors of Romulo Fajardo.  9/10

That’s it for “Pressed to the Nines” for this week – but we still have the “Great Eights” to go! And, keep checking back with TMStash throughout the week for all your news, reviews and commentary!
