PRESSED TO THE NINES – GREAT INDIE TITLES FOR 6-25-2014

Our Rating

The indie scene has some truly amazing titles, and even more must-read books that we could get to in our “10 Spot” feature. THAT’s why we have “Pressed to the Nines”, books that rated a 9/10 on our review scale that are at your local comic shops NOW! Let’s get started with…

SHADOWMAN: END TIMES #3 (of 3) (Valiant) – The tale of Jack Boniface’s search for his father comes to a shocking conclusion as this mini-series wraps up.  There is no status quo at the end of this story.  You won’t believe what happens…or who helps Jack as he confronts his previously-thought-dead father!  Peter Milligan has put together a gripping tale, with exceptional art from Valentine De Landro, Livesay, David Baron and Allen Passalaqua.  9/10

GHOST #5 (Dark Horse) – Chris Sebela takes on solo writing duties with issue #5, as Elisa tries to rebuild her life after the events of the first arc.  She is looking for something less boring in her life…but as they say, be careful what you wish for!  Another great issue of GHOST, with art from Jan Duursema (pencils), Dan Parsons (inks), and Dan Jackson (colors). 9/10

SERENITY: LEAVES ON THE WIND #6 (OF 6) (Dark Horse) – This mini-series gets a proper send-off, with a tale that both brings the arc to a satisfying conclusion and still effectively sets up the potential for more stories should the Whedons decide to do so (please, please do so!).  Will the crew be able to free Zoe from her captivity?  Will she be reunited with her baby?  What other dangers wait along the way?  Zack Whedon does a great job in bringing this tale to a close, with wonderful art from Georges Jeanty (pencils), Karl Story (inks) and Laura Martin (colors). 9/10

CAPTAIN MIDNIGHT #12 (Dark Horse) -Jim Albright has had all the props knocked out from under him.  Good friends are dead, his old sidekick has turned evil, and his inventions have been turned to evil purposes while he was missing in action.  Now, all he wants is a time-out, away from superheroing…but will he be able to really get away?  This issue sets up the upcoming story arc most effectively, with a great scrip from Joshua Williamson, and exceptional artwork from Manual Garcia (pencils), Bit (inks) and Marta Martinez (colors).  The superhero lineup from Dark Horse is really developing well – don’t miss it! 9/10

DREAM POLICE #3  (Image/Joe’s Comics) -Kate Black has always been Joe Thursday’s partner, right?  So, why does he keep seeing Frank Stafford’s face across the Dreamscape?  Meanwhile, Thursday and Black try to solve a mystery surrounding one of their own – a member of the Dream Police charged with the most serious offense possible!  J. Michael Straczynski crafts a great script with excellent art by Sid Kotian (pencils/inks) and HiFi (colors).  9/10
