Our Rating

Welcome back to PRESSED TO THE 9’s, our look at some of the best indie comics available at your comic shop NOW! This week you’ll find THE UNSOUND #4 from BOOM!, with WAYWARD #23 and BITCH PLANET TRIPLE FEATURE #4 from Image! Let’s get started with…

THE UNSOUND #4 (BOOM!) – Cullen Bunn is an amazing storyteller, especially with the eerie and strange tales like HARROW COUNTY…and this series, THE UNSOUND. We have seemingly left all reality for a nightmare hidden in this recently reopened asylum…and some of the confessions you’ll hear in this issue are just as disturbing as anything else you’ll find here.  Jack T. Cole’s illustrations bring that insanity to life in such a vivid way as to invade your dreams…be sure to read this one well before you go to sleep. 9/10

WAYWARD #23 (Image) – I’m running out of superlatives for this beautifully written and just as beautifully illustrated masterpiece. Jim Zub continues to surprise with his knowledge of Japanese folklore in this issue, with the inclusion of object ghosts – Tsukumogami – into the storyline. The story alone is compelling…the folklore included in the story makes it even more fun to read. The beautiful illustrations come from Steven Cummings, with fantastic color work from Tamra Bonvillain. 9/10

BITCH PLANET TRIPLE FEATURE #4 (Image) – While we patiently wait for the continuation of the main  BITCH PLANET  storyline, we have received yet another amazing anthology, filled with stories that add to the disturbing (yet must-read) world Kelly Sue and company have given us. “Life of a Sportsman” by Marc Deschamps and Mindy Lee is so close to today’s reality…in such disturbing ways, and unfortunately spot-on as you’ll see when you read this one. “Bodymod”  by Sara Woolley is only a small step or two into sci-fi away from our present-day obsession with appearance. Finally, “To Be Free…” by Vita Ayala and Rossi Gifford is heartbreaking when you find what the object that needs to be “free” turns out to be. It’s all fitting in the BITCH PLANET world…and all three are worth the thought-provoking read. Don’t forget the interview at the end of this issue! 9/10

That’s it for our Pressed to the 9’s list for this week…don’t miss out on The 10 Spot and The Great 8s to see more of the very best in indie comics!
