Pressed to the 9s: SECRET WEAPONS, RAPTURE, DEPT.H

Our Rating

Welcome back to PRESSED TO THE 9’s, our look at some of the best indie comics available at your comic shop NOW! This week you’ll find SECRET WEAPONS #2 and RAPTURE #3, both from Valiant, and DEPT.H #16 from Dark Horse! Let’s get started with…

SECRET WEAPONS #2 (Valiant) – Livewire is one of the most interesting characters in the Valiant Universe – a former right hand to Toyo Harada who now is on the side of the angels…or at least on a ragtag group of psiots whose powers weren’t deemed “special” enough. I have a feeling we are beginning to see just how special this group really is. The story is amazing, building up a group of young heroes with an amazing mentor in Livewire. Written by Eric Heisserer, with art by Raúl Allén and Patricia Martín, SECRET WEAPONS is proving to be one of the best “secrets” Valiant has. 9/10

RAPTURE #3 (Valiant) – This is as much the story of Babel as it is about the heroes trying to stop him. Can Ninjak, Punk Mambo, Tama the Geomancer, and Rex the Razer reach Babel in time…or will Shadowman give Babel the keys to opening the path to the Liveside? Once again we get a wonderfully layered story by Matt Kindt, with terrific art by Cafu with Roberto De La Torre and colors by Andrew Dalhouse. 9/10

DEPT.H #16 (Dark Horse) – While we are talking about the great Matt Kindt, let’s go to DEPT.H, a wonderful locked-room mystery at the bottom of the sea. DEPT.H is the perfect name for this, for so many reasons beyond the setting. There is a terrific depth to the plot, to the characters, to the mystery itself. This story simply ramps up the tension with every issue, and I’m enjoying every page. Matt Kindt gives us the story and line art, with colors by Sharlene Kindt. Simply outstanding! 9/10

That’s it for our Pressed to the 9’s list for this week…don’t miss out on our 10 SPOT and GREAT 8’s lists to see more of the very best in indie comics!
