Our Rating

Welcome back to PRESSED TO THE 9’s, our look at some of the best indie comics available at your comic shop NOW! This week you’ll find SECRET WEAPONS #1 from Valiant, CLUE #1 from IDW, and BEAUTIFUL CANVAS #1 from Black Mask! Also this week, we include input from mega-reviewer Stacy “Geeky Goddess” Lott!  Let’s get started with…

SECRET WEAPONS #1 (Valiant) – Livewire has learned one of Toya Harada’s most disturbing secrets…the existence of psiots who were shoved aside because their powers weren’t considered “powerful” enough. Held in a secret location, their existence became known as a result of that massive data drop from Harada’s files. Now, they are in serious danger and on the run, and their only hope is…Livewire! This is a great start to the series, written by Eric Heisserer and illustrated by Raúl Allén & Patricia Martín. You will be drawn in by the new characters here…and you’ll never think of birds the same way again. 9/10

CLUE #1 (IDW) – “Clue #1 tickled my fancy and made me wickedly curious for the next issue. I’m excited to follow this mystery down the proverbial rabbit hole and see where Paul Allor will take us.” CLICK HERE for Stacy “Geeky Godess” Lott’s FULL 9/10 review!

BEAUTIFUL CANVAS #1 (Black Mask) – Ryan K. Lindsay is a master of the unique premise – you’ll find stories no one else could tell when you read his books. BEAUTIFUL CANVAS is the latest example from one of the best writers in comics today. You’ll find a hitwoman who is conflicted by her job and the new life her girlfriend is going to bring into the world…by the time you add in an animal/hybrid muscle squad, a pyrokinetic kid, and a big bad who takes the word “cruelty” to new depths, and you have the start to an amazing outstanding series. Sami Kivela (who worked with Lindsay on DEER EDITOR and CHUM) provides the excellent artwork – don’t miss this one! 9/10

That’s it for our Pressed to the 9’s list for this week…don’t miss out on our 10 SPOT and GREAT 8’s lists to see more of the very best in indie comics!
