Pressed to the 9s: RED SONJA, VAMPIRELLA

Our Rating

Welcome back to PRESSED TO THE 9’s, our look at some of the best indie comics available at your comic shop NOW! This week you’ll find RED SONJA V4 #3 and VAMPIRELLA #1, both from Dynamite! Let’s get started with…

RED SONJA V4 #3 (Dynamite) – Sonja has been a fish out of water, navigating her way through the streets of New York…but she begins to come into her own once again in this third installment of the new volume of the She-Devil. This chapter moves the story forward significantly, as she tracks down just who or what has taken her from her own time and placed her in ours. This is an amazing tale – Red Sonja is still the ultimate warrior, still a badass, and the timeline has only highlighted her best qualities. That’s thanks to a terrific story arc by Amy Chu, with outstanding artwork by Carlos Gomez (with colors by Mohan). 9/10

VAMPIRELLA #1 (Dynamite)  – Paul Cornell (writer) and Jimmy Broxton (art/colors) have thrown Vampi far in to the future…and a very strange one at that. We are finding a new look for Vampirella – different than her original and different from her most recent incarnation. I like it – and I really like how this story is coming together. The world is very different…and blood is now black…so what gives? We’ll have to keep reading this new Vampirella series to find out. Can’t wait to see what’s next! 9/10

That’s it for our Pressed to the 9’s list for this week…don’t miss out on our 10 SPOT and GREAT 8’s lists to see more of the very best in indie comics!
