Pressed to the 9s: NINJAK, RED SONJA

Our Rating

Welcome back to PRESSED TO THE 9’s, our look at some of the best indie comics available at your comic shop NOW! This week you’ll find NINJAK #27 from Valiant and RED SONJA v4 #5 from Dynamite! Let’s get started with…

NINJAK #27 (Valiant) – Ninjak is not the only one searching for Doctor Khan, not the only one trying to get to the bottom of Khan’s research. What he finds…is horrifying. And, it’s the start of something big for the Valiant universe. And remember, when Valiant does “big”, they do it better than anyone else! This story has excellent pacing, with a great payoff as we prepare for that big storyline coming up. Kevin Maurer scripts this story, with exceptional artwork by Cafu and David Baron (with colors by Dave Sharpe).  9/10

RED SONJA v4 #5 (Dynamite) – Amy Chu continues to deliver an outstanding storyline for the She-Devil, as the battle gets into high gear with Gath. Our friendly officer (who turns out to have a connection to the past) may be the key to a win…but can he figure out how to use his talents in time? I really love how Chu merges the classic notes of Sonja with present day sensibilities…without making either seem trite. We get the best of this iconic character, with a great story and with great illustrations by Marcio Fiorito and Carlos Gomez (with colors by Mohan). 9/10

That’s it for our Pressed to the 9’s list for this week…don’t miss out on our 10 SPOT and GREAT 8’s lists to see more of the very best in indie comics!
