Welcome back to PRESSED TO THE 9’s, our look at some of the best indie comics available at your comic shop NOW! This week you’ll find GRASS KINGS #7 from BOOM!, SHEENA QUEEN OF THE JUNGLE #1 from Dynamite, and DOCTOR WHO: THE TENTH DOCTOR #3.9 (Titan)! Let’s get started with…

GRASS KINGS #7 (BOOM!) – We may be past that HUGE battle…but don’t think all the turmoil has ended. There is a murderer possibly hiding out in the Grass Kingdom. The search is on, but how do you investigate in a “kingdom” where everybody came simply to be left alone? Matt Kindt takes us in a fresh direction, one that guarantees we will see a lot more wonder in GRASS KINGS. The artwork continues to excel, thanks to the amazing Tyler Jenkins. This is a tense psychological study of an isolated community that has shut itself off from society…and at the same time a terrific mystery that requires some trust outside that tight circle of people. Another great issue! 9/10

SHEENA QUEEN OF THE JUNGLE #1 (Dynamite) – Marguerite Bennett and Christina Trujillo take on this iconic character, with a great first issue. Sheena is up against spy drones (operated by a kid?) and a more present danger in a paramilitary group ready to set up strip mining in the middle of her home territory! There is an important balance with a Sheena story – making sure you capture the isolation that leaves her unsure of western tech, yet still showing her nobility and intelligence. Bennet and Trujillo hit the mark, with a story well worth the read.  The illustrations are exceptional as well, thanks to Moritat and Dimi Macheras, with colors by Moritat and Casey Silver. 9/10

DOCTOR WHO: THE TENTH DOCTOR #3.9 (Titan) – “The Lost Dimension” continues as the Tenth Doctor has his chance to deal with this strange phenomenon. It appears to encompass ALL the Doctors, so what’s next? Cybermen? Quite possibly – though with a surprise in terms of whether they can…wait, I’ll leave that to you to read for yourself. Let’s just say that Titan Comics is having a lot of fun once again with their big crossover event for the Doctor(s). Nick Abadzis delivers a fantastic story, with great artwork by Mariano Laclaustra and Carlos Cabrera (with assist by Fer Centurion and colors by Hernán Cabrera). 9/10

That’s it for our Pressed to the 9’s list for this week…don’t miss out on The 10 Spot and The Great 8s to see more of the very best in indie comics!
