PRESSED TO THE 9s: ACTIONVERSE FEATURING STRAY, CHARLES BAND’S PUPPET MASTER

Our Rating

Welcome back to PRESSED TO THE 9’s, our look at some of the best indie comics available at your comic shop NOW! This week you’ll find ACTIONVERSE FEATURING: STRAY #3 from Action Lab, and CHARLES BAND’S PUPPET MASTER: CURTAIN CALL #1 from Action Lab’s Danger Zone! Let’s get started with…

ACTIONVERSE FEATURING STRAY #3 (Action Lab) – Issue three brings “The Rottweiler Years” to a terrific conclusion…but the real story is just beginning! It has been wonderful to see the teenage Rottweiler in action with his TEENAEGIS group, but all the action has been pointing to this…who is the mysterious person from Stray’s past who has reappeared in today’s world? Stray is a terrific protagonist, finding his own way in the hero world after losing his mentor and father. This arc has given him more depth, and given us even more reason to cheer for the former Rottweiler.  It’s a great story thanks to a stellar script from Vito Delsante, with amazing artwork from Lee Gaston (pgs 1-19), Steve Walker and Ares Taveras (pgs 19-22), and colors by Wilson Ramos Jr.  9/10

CHARLES BAND’S PUPPET MASTER: CURTAIN CALL #1 (Action Lab/Danger Zone) – We’re getting close to the big conclusion of the PUPPET MASTER series of stories from Action Lab’s Danger Zone…but if we have to leave this horrific-yet-fun-to-read world, at least we’re going out on a high note. This first issue of “Curtain Call” sets us up for a huge battle over control of the puppets, and I can’t wait to see the rest of the series! It’s a “killer” script by Shawn Gabborin, with devastatingly good artwork by Daniel J. Logan (colors by Yann Perrelet). 9/10

That’s it for our Pressed to the 9’s list for this week…don’t miss out on The 10 Spot and The Great 8’s to see more of the very best in indie comics!
