PRESSED TO THE NINES – GREAT INDIE TITLES FOR 1-28-2015

Our Rating

The indie scene has some truly amazing titles, and even more must-read books that we could get to in our “10 Spot” feature. THAT’s why we have PRESSED TO THE NINES, books that rated a 9/10 on our review scale that are at your local comic shops NOW! Let’s get started with…

QUANTUM AND WOODY MUST DIE! #1 (Valiant) – The World’s Worst Superhero Team is back…and for once they are actually getting along! The problem is that not everyone is happy with THEM, and someone wants them DEAD! Oh, and Goat is getting ready to deliver a…kid? Yep! James Asmus has us once again in stitches with one of the best (and funniest) books on the comic shop shelves today, and Steve Lieber does a great job with the artwork (with excellent color work by Dave McCaig). You can always count on Q&W for great adventure and a LOT of fun! 9/10

ABIGAIL AND THE SNOWMAN #2 (KaBOOM!) – This adorable tale continues as Abigail and her invisible yeti go to school! You cannot help but fall in love with this family – Abigail’s hard working and doting father, Abigail herself, and of course our wonderful yeti. Roger Langridge writes, illustrates and letters this excellent book, with great colors by Fred Stressing. It is a warm story, put together brilliantly – don’t miss it! 9/10

MUNCHKIN #1 (BOOM! Box) – This book is based on the game, but you don’t have to play the game to love MUNCHKIN. It puts together several short stories, written by Tom Siddell, Jim Zub and John Kovalic and illustrated by Mike Holmes, Rian Sygh and Kovalic (with colors in the first two stories by Fred Stressing). The stories are fanciful and carry out the spirit of game play, in a game where the players are quick to turn on each other. A truly fun and entertaining book! 9/10

UNITY #14 (Valiant) – In the fight with the United, Faith sees the best…and the worst in her team, while GIN-GR tries to prove it’s worth to a world that has also seen the worst in this “alien robot”. What will Faith do about what she has seen…and how will the world react to this former threat? Matt Kindt is driving this team to some big changes in another excellent issue, with great art by CAFU (pencils/inks) and Brian Reber (colors). 9/10

X-O MANOWAR #32 (Valiant) – The ARMORINES arc comes to a head in this issue as Phillip Zahn has Aric just where he wants him…or at least that’s how it appears. We get an exceptional battle in this issue – all the stops are pulled on this one by Robert Venditti, with fantastic art by Diego Bernard (pencils), Alisson Rodrigues (inks), and Wil Quintana (colors). 9/10

TUROK: DINOSAUR HUNTER #11 (Dynamite) – Turok in Sherwood Forest! Have I not convinced you yet? How about this…this is another great issue of TUROK by writers Greg Pak and Paul Tobin, twisting the legends of…you know…with the great history of Turok. The artwork continues to excel here, by Felipe Cunha and Ruari Coleman (with colors by Luigi Anderson). 9/10
