Guardians of the Galaxy: The Tragedy of Star Lord’s Grandpa

In anticipation of Guardians of The Galaxy vol. 2, most people have been re-watching the original film.  While watching this many of you may have missed possibly the saddest moment of the film.  The most tragic moment in the film may not be when Groot “dies” or even the death of Peter’s mother, specifically.  It may actually have been the moment Peter was abducted by the Ravagers.

At this point in the film you are probably sympathetic towards Peter for losing his mother at such a young age. Also maybe for his mother for losing her life too early, leaving her son all alone.  But how many people stop and think about Grandpa.  Do you ever stop and think of the gravity of what happened to him in the matter of minutes?  No parent should ever have to bury their own child, let alone be victim of a kidnapping.

This is a man who allegedly pledged to take “great care” of Peter until his father could come for him.  A wish he gave to his dying daughter. Not only did he lose his child and grandchild but he failed his daughters dying wish.  Could you imagine the guilt and pain this man went on to live with while Peter was out gallivanting around the galaxy.

So next time you pop in the Guardians of the Galaxy disc, make sure you take a moment to feel empathy for Peter’s grandpa who had to live the rest of the film with that burden.  Also, before you get too bummed out by this article, please note that Gregg Henry, who played Peter’s grandpa, is credited on IMDb for Vol. 2.  Will it just be a flashback?  We will have to wait and see.  Maybe, James Gunn had pity on the tragedy that is Star Lord’s grandpa.

With great power comes great responsibility, which is why I read and write about comics. Beats running around in spandex.
