The Great 8s: AMERIKARATE, LUMBERJANES

Our Rating

Welcome back to The Great 8s – our look at 8/10 rated indie comics you’ll find at your comic shop NOW! This week you’ll find AMERIKARATE #6 from Action Lab’s Danger Zone mature imprint, and LUMBERJANES #42 from BOOM! Box! Let’s get started with…

AMERIKARATE #6 (Action Lab/Danger Zone) – Okay, this is not a family-friendly book…and that’s the point. If you want over-the-top action, huge (wildly inappropriate) laughs, and if you really, really love those 80’s martial arts flicks, THIS is your book! Corey Kalman and Brockton McKinney must be having the time of their lives putting the script together – with every reference, in-joke and un-PC remark you can every hope to find The artwork by Daniel Arruda Massa is spot-on what a story like this needs. If you are looking for squeaky-clean…this ain’t it.  It you are looking for over-the-top amazing, it’s right here! 8/10

LUMBERJANES #42 (BOOM! Box) – Okay, now THIS is something to take home to all ages. LUMBERJANES is creative, fun, just the right amount of quirky, and full of awesomeness.  We’re getting closer to finding out just how the summer can last SO long at the camp…but don’t think this series will quit giving us amazing twists. What happens to the camp in this issue is…I just don’t know a non-spoilery way to describe it! Just check out LUMBERJANES, written by Shannon Watters and Kat Leyh, with illustrations by Ayme Satuyo and colors by Maarta Laiho. 8/10
