The Great 8s: ACTION LAB DOG OF WONDER, 9th, 10th and 12th DOCTORS

Our Rating

Welcome back to The Great 8’s – our look at 8/10 rated indie comics you’ll find at your comic shop NOW! This  week you’ll find ACTION LAB: DOG OF WONDER #2 from Action Lab, and the adventures of not one but THREE different Doctors in the NINTH DOCTOR #2, TENTH DOCTOR #10, and TWELFTH DOCTOR #6, all from Titan Comics! Let’s get started with…

ACTION LAB: DOG OF WONDER #2 (Action Lab) – I’m a dog person, and I’m sure that has something to do with it…but I can’t help but cheer on Percy and his friends in ACTION LAB: DOG OF WONDER. There is more than a sense of adventure here – there is also a warmth to this story that makes you just want to reach through the panel and give those cute little dogs a rub behind the ear and a “good boy” or “good girl” to each of them. We learn more of the back story behind the Action Lab operation (the dog version, not the publisher), and I’m enjoying every page of this book! Written by Vito Delsante and Scott Fogg, and illustrated by the great team of Rosy Higgins and Ted Brandt, this is one of those feel-good books you really should be adding to the buy pile. 8/10

DOCTOR WHO: THE NINTH DOCTOR #2 (Titan) – You’ll hear this again, trust me, but Titan has been a GREAT home for the Doctor no matter which incarnation of Doctor Who you prefer. This adventure of the Ninth Doctor gives us just as much about Rose Tyler as with the Doctor…or is it the Doctor? Cavan Scott has given us a fantastic script, with excellent artwork by Adriana Melo (with colors by Matheus Lopes).  8/10

DOCTOR WHO: THE TENTH DOCTOR ADVENTURES YEAR TWO #10 (Titan) – This story bends reality in ways that even a Doctor Who story rarely does…including twisting the TARDIS itself in metaphysical knots! Nick Abadzis consistently provides great scripts for the Doctor, and Elena Casagrande shows once again why she is such an outstanding artist (with excellent colors by Arianna Florean with Azzura Florean). The Tenth Doctor is a favorite for a lot of fans…and if you happen to be one of them (even if you’re not), this series is well worth checking out! 8/10

DOCTOR WHO: THE TWELFTH DOCTOR ADVENTURES YEAR TWO #6 (Titan) – This issue picks up after that unfortunate matter with Clara, and the latest Doctor goes in search of some really good music in a place called the Twist (and yes, there is a pun in there, but still…). Of course, the Doctor ends up in a mystery and in a world of trouble. This is a great start to the arc by writer George Mann, and this issue gives us some of the best artwork I’ve seen for the Twelfth Doctor, thanks to Mariano Laclaustra (with colors by Carlos Cabrera with Thiago Ribeiro). 8/10

That’s it for the Great 8’s – also check out our 10 SPOT and PRESSED TO THE 9’s lists for more of the best in indie comics today!
