Yesterday evening David Ayer, director of Suicide Squad and the forthcoming Netflix original Bright, posted an image of Batman villain Black Mask to his Twitter feed, seemingly apropos of nothing.

Black Mask, also known as Roman Sionis, is a sadistic gangster and lesser-known member of Batman’s rogues gallery. A cult favorite of sorts since his introduction in 1985, Sionis has already figured prominently in DC Comics multimedia from Warner Bros. Animation’s Under the Red Hood film to Rocksteady’s Batman: Arkham video games.
Could this mean Ayer is planning on having Black Mask antagonize Harley Quinn, Poison Ivy, and Catwoman in his Suicide Squad followup, Gotham City Sirens? Does Ayer just really like Doug Moench? Is this an innocuous bit of social media that means absolutely nothing but will get talked about ad nauseum anyway? Only time and wildly unchecked Internet speculation will tell.
