At this years Brazil Comic-Con we got a first glimpse at the new animated Miles Morales Spiderman film Spider-Man: Into the Spider-verse. Miles Morales was originally part of Marvels Ultimate line of comics, a new continuity created (Earth 1610) to reboot the Marvel Universe for a new generation of fans seperate from the main one (Earth 616). After the recent Secret Wars mega event merged the multi-verse Miles became a permanent fixture in the main continuity. He became the street level Spider-Man while Parkers web head now has a more global story. He was created by writer Brian Micheal Bendis and Sarah Pichelli while the inspiration came from the election of President Barak O’Bama and actor Donald Glover’s campaign to play the web slinger in Sony’s The Amazing Spider-Man.
Appearing first in Ultimate Fallout #4, Miles Morales takes on the mantle of Spider-Man after the death of Peter Parker. Like Parker, Miles’ spidey skillz come from a genetically altered spider injected with the OZ formula at Oscop. He’s bitten after one of the spiders hitches a ride with his uncle, the Prowler, after stealing a sample of the OZ formula. In addition to Parkers abilities, Miles manifested two newer powers to add to his spider-arsenal. The first being able to camouflage himself in his surroundings. The second is the Venom Strike which paralyzes through physical contact and can be conducted through his webs. After helping S.H.I.E.L.D. he is given his black and red suit and is endorsed as the new Spider-Man.
The title “Into the Spider-Verse” likely points at his origins, injection into the world of being a Spider-Man, and the internal struggle of him destined to become a criminal like his father and uncle. However, it could imply that a future sequel could introduce the awesome Spider-Verse event. This ultimate team-up united several versions of Spider-Man from the multi-verse who are being hunted and elimated from existence. Aside from the other cool Spider-Men across the multi-verse, it introduced Cindy Moon, aka Silk, the girl who was bitten by the exact same spider as Peter Parker (616).
The animation looks great, especially the comic frame, and the footage of a clumsy green Spider-Man chasing the Prowler definitely hints at his early days. Though I wonder if this will also serve as his introduction into Sony’s Spider-Verse which is set to begin months before with Venom on October 5th. Phil Lord and Christopher Miller (Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs, The Lego Movie) are producing along with Shameik Moore (The Get Down) voicing Miles Morales. Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse swings into theatres December 21st, 2018.
