Deadpool 2: The Abundance of Writers and Lack of Jackman

The last two days have been a whirlwind for the writing rumors and news for Deadpool 2 and the connected project, X-Force.  Most of this news having originated at Collider.  Yesterday Collider reported that Cabin in the Woods writer/director Drew Goddard has been brought on take over head writing duties for Deadpool 2.  This addition was a response to an apparent script slow down with original Deadpool scribes, Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick.  Ryan Reynolds quickly took to twitter to clarify that Reese and Wernick “are still very much writing the screenplay.”

Yesterday, Collider also reported that The Smokin’ Aces and The Grey writer/director Joe Carnahan is working on the script for the Deadpool spin-off feature, X-Force.  X-Force is another Rob Liefeld/Marvel creation, that was adapted from The New Mutants.  X-Force is a team of mutants that take more aggressive and deadly actions than their counterparts in the X-Men.  The team was originally made up of Boom Boom, Cable, Cannonball, Domino, Feral, Shatterstar and Warpath, and also often featured Deadpool.  Cable and Domino are both going to be featured in Deadpool 2 and should be expected to star in X-Force along side Deadpool.

Personnel changes and additions have become common place for Fox’s Deadpool projects.  In October original Deadpool director Tim Miller left the project over multiple creative differences with star Ryan Reynolds.  It was rumored that Miller wanted to go blockbuster with the sequel, while Reynolds wanted to stick with the formula that worked so well with the first film.  The following month (November) it was officially announced that fan favorite, John Wick Director David Leitch was announced.

One final bit of sad news related to these projects.  Today on Facebook Live, Hugh Jackman confirmed that he will not be making an appearance in Deadpool 2 with the following statement.  “No, and Ryan is currently sleeping outside my house,” Jackman stated. “Look, if that movie had appeared 10 years ago, probably a different story, but I knew two and a half years ago that this was the last one.”  Fans and Reynolds both wanted to see this team up, but Jackman has been pretty firm on his decision to retire after Logan.

With great power comes great responsibility, which is why I read and write about comics. Beats running around in spandex.
