“American Nature” by Greg and Fake – What Mad Wishes It Was Today (review)

am natureRecently, Greg and Fake sent some pages of “American Nature” to TMStash for review.  For those who haven’t already caught on to their work, you can find “American Nature” as the back-up story in issues of “Hoax Hunters” from Image Comics, and you can also find their work at AmericanNature.us.  In the pages sent to us (including the page posted here), they even do a send up of “Hoax Hunters” itself, placing them in the hunt for a chupacabra with an almost-Scooby Doo twist.  And, we had the chance to look at an episode of “Messenger Boy Social Club”, which has to be seen to be believed.

Their humor is what you would expect from a group trying to out-Mad “Mad Magazine”.  It is irreverent, at times surreal, and leaves nothing and no one safe from parody.  I’d say that it is at times objectionable, questionable, a bit obscene and downright improper – but I think that’s what they’re going for here.  If you ever wondered what happened to the “Mad” you loved, it has a successor – “American Nature”, found in the pages of “Hoax Hunters” from Image Comics.
