A Terrifying and Awesome Vision from Clive Barker in “Next Testament” #1 (review)

20130528-190613.jpgFans of Clive Barker take note: this new dark fantasy called “Next Testament” is a must read! This first issue sets the table for a trip into a strange and horrific world that will have fans coming back for more. We meet Julian Desmond, a man without faith and without compassion…but with a very strange dream that takes control of his life.  He follows this dream to find his true faith, in the form of Wick, a being of immense power who claims to be God.  Wick’s power is matched only by his lack of concern for human life, and he is a perfect “God” for Desmond.

We also meet a counterpoint to Julian in the form of his son Tristan Desmond.  Tristan is engaged and appears to be ready to lead a very different life than his father.  But, he realizes that something is very wrong and begins to investigate at the Desmond mansion with his fiancée Elspeth, unaware of the events across the globe.  What will happen when father and son meet?  And, can anything survive in the face of a man and his “God” whose goal is to “make a scar” on the earth?  This looks to be an excellent series, and I’m looking forward to what comes next.

Clive Barker and Mark Miller team up for the writing duties here, with art by Haemi Jang.  There are three variant covers, including one limited edition painted by Barker himself.  “Next Testament” #1 is a truly chilling vision from the mind of Clive Barker – don’t miss it!
