The 10 Spot: WICDIV, ANIMOSITY

Our Rating

Welcome once again to THE 10 SPOT – TMStash’s round-up of the very best in Indie comics each week. This week brings us THE WICKED + THE DIVINE 455 A.D. from Image and ANIMOSITY #7 from Aftershock! Let’s get started with…

THE WICKED + THE DIVINE 455 A.D. (Image) – Even if you have somehow missed out on WICDIV (one of the best series in comics today), you’ll still be able to follow this one-shot, set back in the waning days of the Western Roman Empire…or was it really the waning days given what “Julius” is doing? As complex as WICDIV has become (in the best of ways), this one-shot is easy to follow, and yet still keeps all the amazing characterizations you’ve come to know and love. “Game of Thrones” has nothing on this story. Kieron Gillen writes and André Araújo illustrates this one-shot (with colors by Matthew Wilson). Everything about this issue is outstanding, and that’s why it’s 10/10

ANIMOSITY #7 (Aftershock) – Jesse is being rescued from the lair of the Lammergeier, with unimaginable atrocities literally hanging overhead. Writer Marguerite Bennett has found a way to horrify us and tug at our heartstrings at the same time – didn’t know that was possible. Still, there is something about Sandor that I can’t quite put my finger on…except that Sandor is the most determined dog in comics (but is that all?). This is an incredibly powerful story, and one that is appointment reading for me with every issue. The artwork by Rafael De Latorre (with colors by Rob Schwager) is amazing. This is another issue of ANIMOSITY that rates 10/10

That’s it for this week’s 10 SPOT – but we aren’t done yet with our round-up of great indie books! Be sure to look for PRESSED TO THE 9’s and THE GREAT 8’s for more reviews of amazing indie comics!
