THE 10 SPOT – OUR TOP REVIEWED INDIE TITLES FOR 7-30-2014

Our Rating

Welcome to another installment of The 10 Spot – a quick round-up of the very best books from indie publishers this week. Kicking off this week’s 10 Spot is…

Armor Hunters: Harbinger #1 (Valiant) – Generation Zero has been running away, led by Cronus (who doesn’t care if the rest of the world burns). So, what brings them to the middle of the action, and what causes them and some notable Renegades to meet again? This excellent tie-in to ARMOR HUNTERS continues the legacy of the young members of the Valiant Universe, with a great script by Joshua Dysart and fantastic illustrations by Robert Gill (pencils/inks) and Romulo Fajardo (colors). 10/10

Red Sonja #0 (Dynamite) – Gail Simone brings us an amazing tale of Red Sonja’s…husband? Mourning the “late” She-Devil With a Sword? Don’t worry, all is explained in this excellent zero issue. This is the tale of “Red Malek” – is he real or deluded? And, will you care about him by issue’s end? Gail is writing this one, after all, so what do you think? Noah Salonga has wonderful illustrations with excellent color work by Elmer Santos. Another excellent tale for an excellent series – and a 10/10

Ten Grand #10 (Image/Joe’s Comics) – Joe Fitzgerald knows how to play the odds, and he knows how to play most people…but will those skills help him out in the pits of Hell? Can he prevent an all-out assault on Heaven, and does he even care if that happens? What DOES Joe care about? You’ll learn a LOT in this issue! TEN GRAND mixes Noir with the afterlife is a way that no other comic today touches, thanks to writer J. Michael Straczynski and artist C.P. Smith. It’s fitting that TEN GRAND earns a 10/10

X-O Manowar #27 (Valiant) – This issue gives you more of the Armor Hunters’ tale – including how they came about the weapon…the ONLY weapon…that seems to take down an armor bearer! Now, having a weapon and USING that weapon are two different things, so there’s training to be had…and we see some early hunting in this tale. Remember, the huntes think that THEY are the good guys, no matter what Aric and the people of Earth may believe. This is a great look at the hunters, in this story by Robert Venditti, with amazing artwork by Diego Bernard (pencils), Alisson Rodrigues (inks), and Brian Reber (colors). 10/10

That’s it for our 10 Spot this week – but we still have more great indie comics in our “Pressed to the Nines” feature and our “Great Eights”. And, keep checking in throughout the week with TMStash for all your news, reviews and commentary!
