The 10 Spot – Our TOP Reviewed Indie Titles for 5-14-2014

Our Rating

Welcome to another installment of The 10 Spot – a quick round-up of the very best books from indie publishers this week. Kicking off this week’s 10 Spot is…

BLOODSHOT AND H.A.R.D. CORPS #22 (Valiant) – Duffy Boudreau joins Christos Gage as co-writer of this exellent series, and the debut issue for the new team-up has a shocker!  Did Bloodshot really kill a member of H.A.R.D. Corps in cold blood?  Just how far will he go to deal with Project Rising Spirit…and how far will THEY go to stop him?  The art by Al Barrionuevo (with colors by Matt Milla) is exceptional, with great expression and some amazing action sequences.  You may hear this a lot…but THIS issue is truly a blockbuster!  10/10

MANDALA  (Dark Horse) We interviewed Stuart Moore and Bruce Zick, who still claim that a shadowy cabal called “The Thirteen” are the REAL creators of this great graphic novel.  Regardless of who actually did create this book, it’s a unique title that deserves an additional look.  What IS the Mandala?  What role do the Thirteen play in trying to save the world?  MANDALA is ambitious, a little audacious, definitely mind-bending…and a thoroughly engrossing and entertaining book.  10/10

STARLIGHT #3 (Image) – Mark Millar’s wonderful tale of a hero well past his prime continues as McQueen finds that the world he once saved is now very, very different.  He picks up the fight once again…but does he still have what it takes?  Goran Parlov’s art (with Ive Svorcina’s colors) has just the right retro tone for this epic.  It’s a wonderful tale of heroism and an attempt to regain lost glory.  Don’t miss it!  10/10

PRINCELESS SHORT STORIES VOL 1 (Action Lab) – It’s not often we recommend a reprint…in fact, I don’t think we have before…but THIS book is well worth the recommendation as you may have missed this gem the first time it hit the market.  Jeremy Whitley’s wonderful world of PRINCELESS is brought to your comics shop in anthology form, with a variety of great up and coming artists who well deserve the exposure that this Eisner-nominated and multiple-Glyph-Award winning group of characters can bring.  The stories are truly wonderful all-ages tales – entertaining for any age.  Be sure to check this out!  10/10

That’s it for our 10 Spot this week – but we still have more great indie comics in our “Pressed to the Nines” feature and our “Great Eights”.  And, keep checking in throughout the week with TMStash for all your news, reviews and commentary!
