The 10 Spot: BLOODSHOT SALVATION, SECRET WEAPONS, VIOLENT LOVE

Our Rating

Welcome once again to THE 10 SPOT – TMStash’s round-up of the very best in Indie comics each week. This week brings us BLOODSHOT SALVATION #1 and SECRET WEAPONS #4, both from Valiant, and VIOLENT LOVE #8 from Image! Let’s get started with…

BLOODSHOT SALVATION #1 (Valiant) – Bloodshot and Magic have a baby…and there are some pretty bad guys after her. We follow two timelines with writer Jeff Lemire. One is present day with Ray Garrison, Magic, and baby Jessie – with Ray doing his best not to go back to being the killing machine known as Bloodshot. In the future, Bloodshot is nowhere to be found…but neither is Ray, and a tween-aged Jessie is being hunted ruthlessly. This is the start of something great! The art by Lews LaRosa and Mico Suayan (with colors by Brian Reber) live up to the high standards you find in every Valiant book. This is a fantastic first issue – can’t wait for more! 10/10

SECRET WEAPONS #4 (Valiant) – This mini-series may be ending…but there are some great things in store for this group of psiot “rejects” mentored by Livewire. Can’t say more here…not even gonna say if everyone comes out alive (you know there are no guarantees with a Valiant story).  What I will say is that writer Eric Heisserer has given us some amazingly compelling characters, regardless of their unusual power sets. I really loved how this brought out the best in not only Livewire but the entire group. The art by Raúl Allén and Patricia Martín is fantastic throughout. 10/10

VIOLENT LOVE #8 (Image) – We are eight issues into this modern day Bonnie and Clyde with a twist, and the story is still as fresh as it was on the first page of issue #1. Frank Barbiere gives us an especially amazing character in Daisy Jane – one of the very best anti-heroes in comics. There is a lot of bloodshed, plenty of deceit, and one overriding grudge that makes this story great. The artwork gives us all the violence without going too far…a hard line to walk, but Victor Santos walks that line perfectly. This is a great series – and easily a 10/10

That’s it for this week’s 10 SPOT – but we aren’t done yet with our round-up of great indie books! Be sure to look for PRESSED TO THE 9’s and THE GREAT 8’s for more reviews of amazing indie comics!
