The 10 Spot: BITCH PLANET TRIPLE FEATURE, TIME & VINE, I HATE FAIRYLAND, LAZARUS X-66

Our Rating

Welcome once again to THE 10 SPOT – TMStash’s round-up of the very best in Indie comics each week. This week brings us BITCH PLANET TRIPLE FEATURE #2, I HATE FAIRYLAND #14, AND LAZARUS X-66 #1, all from Image, and TIME & VINE #1 from IDW! Let’s get started with…

BITCH PLANET TRIPLE FEATURE #2 (Image) – This second issue in the anthology lives up to both issue #1 and to the main BITCH PLANET feature. Now, I have a particular cheer to give to a couple of artists I’ve been a BIG fan of for quite some time…Ro Stein and Ted Brandt (their work on PRINCESS: RAVEN, THE PIRATE PRINCESS was top-notch, and their art is once again spot-on here in Danielle Henderson’s “This Is Good For You”.  All three stories in this issue (including “Bits and Pieces” and “What’s Love Got to Do With It”) are outstanding – entertaining tales that make you think…what more could you want? 10/10

TIME & VINE #1 (IDW) – I was already a fan of Thom Zahler’s work in LONG DISTANCE and once again we find a story with a warm heart and well-developed characters that draw you almost instantly into a world where the fantastic is possible. Sit down, have a glass of wine, and…travel back in time! Zahler provides both the story and art, with colors by Luigi Anderson. This book is worth a second look…and a third…aw, just go out and get this one, okay? 10/10

I HATE FAIRYLAND #14 (Image) – Gert has tried everything else in her bid to leave Fairyland, even trying to be…good? Yes, that quest continues, but how can someone a muffin’ fluffin’ violent as Gert ever be “good”? This issue answers that question, at least in part, while we keep asking why all these strange people keep wanting to marry…someone who looks as young as Gert…what is up with these people? Skottie Young continues to send us the most hilarious comic on the stands today, with colors by Jean-Francois Beaulieu. 10/10

LAZARUS X-66 #1 (Image) – While we wait for the main LAZARUS series to return, this spin-off gives us an amazing character study for Sgt. Casey Solomon, already a hero, who is in the course to become a Dagger, the best of the best (think Navy Seal for a comparison). This is a terrific story, and even if you haven’t been following LAZARUS, you’ll find THIS issue more than worth the read. Greg Rucka and Eric Trautmann write the script, with art by Steve Lieber and colors by Santi Arcas. 10/10

That’s it for this week’s 10 SPOT – but we aren’t done yet with our round-up of great indie books! Be sure to look for PRESSED TO THE 9’s and THE GREAT 8’s for more reviews of amazing indie comics!
