Welcome once again to THE 10 SPOT – TMStash’s round-up of the very best in Indie comics each week. This week brings us ANIMOSITY #11, ALTERS #8, and MONSTRO MECHANICA #1, all from Aftershock, along with GRASS KINGS #10 from BOOM! and BLOODSHOT SALVATION #4 from Valiant! What a week! Let’s get started with…

ANIMOSITY #11 (Aftershock) – Marguerite Bennett’s script reads like poetry, especially in the early pages as we hear the bees tell their story. What is the worth of a life, no matter how small? This story delves into that subject with amazing empathy and a wonderful, gripping plotline. The artwork by Rafael De Latorre (with colors by Rob Schwager) is simply stunning. ANIMOSITY gives us a whole new look at life – and it is once again 10/10

ALTERS #8 (Aftershock) – Yes, this book arrived on your comics shelf last week…but I took last week off and didn’t want to miss the chance to tell you about this amazing title. After an initial arc that introduced us to Chalice, we are learning this arc about Sharise and her children, and are watching a powerful tale about homelessness, wrapped in one of the most intriguing metahuman stories around. We continue to see consequences for prior events, as Philip is faced with continuing life unable to care for himself…or to use his powers and watch his life end much sooner as a result. That’s not the only tough choice in this issue – and the story continues to be outstanding! Paul Jenkins is giving us a terrific script, matched by the artwork of Leila Leiz (with colors by Leonardo Pacciarotti). 10/10

MONSTRO MECHANICA #1 (Aftershock) –  Back to this week’s releases, and we see the debut of a highly intriguing new title from Paul Allor and Chris Evanhuis that takes us back to the days of Leonardo da Vinci…but the real story is with his apprentice Isabela and the amazing mechanical man she is slowly bringing to sentience.  There is intrigue, deceit, danger…and the beginning of another fantastic title from Aftershock.  The artwork is outstanding, the story is compelling…and the debut is a 10/10

GRASS KINGS #10 (BOOM!) – Shelly and Maria take center stage as we delve deeper into the mystery surrounding Jen’s apparent suicide, and we start to see that the Grass Kingdom isn’t what it was cracked up to be. Just how deep does this mystery go? We start to find out here, in another excellent chapter of this story by writer extraordinaire Matt Kindt, with fantastic art by Tyler Jenkins (colors by Hilary Jenkins). 10/10

BLOODSHOT SALVATION #4 (Valiant) – We see the origins of both the Scarred Man and Rampage in this issue…and it takes the reader by surprise.  This is a heartbreaking story, even though it ends up with a powerful antagonist for our favorite nanite-infused anti-hero.  I actually have sympathy for Rampage now…and I believe you will too after this issue. Jeff Lemire hits it out of the park once again, with terrific artwork by Mico Suayan (colors by Diego Rodriguez). 10/10

That’s it for this week’s 10 Spot. Join us again next week for more reviews of the BEST in indie comics!
